Over Memorial Day weekend in 2018 I was playing euchre with some friends when I played the wrong card. My partner completely rejected my lame explanation that my mistake was due to my ALS, and said, “don’t play the ALS card with me!” At that moment I thought how cool it would be to have an actual “ALS Card” that I could throw down and play in that or any similar situation. Printing up a bunch of cards for my own personal use would have been easy, but as my wife would attest I often go overboard with my crazy ideas (see SelectQuote or Coke ALS Fighter Challenge). What if other people with ALS (“PALS”) and/or caregivers of those with ALS (“CALS”) started playing The ALS Card™ too? What if this helped raise ALS awareness by fostering conversations between those within the ALS community and those outside of it?
Fast forward just over a year and we’ve trademarked The ALS Card™ with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, set up a legitimate business entity (NeufStrong), designed, manufactured and packaged the cards, and arranged to have them sold and shipped by Amazon! The majority of the effort I have been able to complete with my eye gaze computer, with design assistance from my talented sister-in-law and assembly and packaging labor from my wife and kids. We hope to eventually break even on this idea while simultaneously raising awareness about the challenges of ALS and hopefully making the lives of PALS & CALS a little easier along the way. I have always felt that humor can be an effective tool to break the ice regarding difficult subjects, and I believe that using The ALS Card™ can do that. Whenever a PALS or CALS needs a favor, some simple assistance, a discount, or just a plain-old break, they can now try playing The ALS Card™!
The cards are available exclusively on Amazon (link below) and are available in three colors (blue, black, and hot pink) and two sizes (5-pack and 10-pack). Order some today (they make a great gift), try them out, and post your results to our Facebook page (make sure to mark the post as “public”). We can’t guarantee any results, but we’d love to hear about your experiences! Thank you for your support!
